Tony Hosaroygard

Systems Administrator & Self-Hosting / Automation Engineer

Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

Summary

Systems Administrator at Timberlands Pacific with 25 years across systems administration, service delivery, and IT support, from hands-on infrastructure and virtualisation work to service-desk roles supporting everyone from trauma counsellors to forestry scientists with PhDs. Comfortable end-to-end: Windows and Linux server administration, Active Directory, virtualisation (Proxmox, VMware, Citrix), and network/firewall configuration for Palo Alto and FortiGate, then the automation and tooling layered on top to make all of it repeatable. Outside work, core developer and moderator on late.sh, a live multi-user SSH platform, where I design and build Lateania, its persistent fantasy MUD, and founder of several international Discord communities totaling 80,000+ members, including Home, run on plain common sense instead of heavy-handed moderation.

Experience

Systems AdministratorPresent Dec 2025 – Present · 8 mos

Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd · Full-time · Launceston, Tasmania, Australia · On-site

One of four in the ICT team at a forestry company operating across Tasmania, South Australia, and Victoria, supporting 33 office staff and around 500 contractors working with SQL, LiDAR, yield modelling, and silviculture tooling in the field. The users aren't typical office staff. Most hold PhDs or masters degrees in forestry or data science, and when something lands it's usually a GIS pipeline, database connector, or application integration problem.

Since joining as Systems Administrator:

  • Deployed a Proxmox VE 9 host from bare metal to begin the move off VMware: MPIO iSCSI to an HPE MSA 2060 SAN, trunked access to all VLANs, and a tested ESXi migration path proven on a production server
  • Built SQL Server 2025 on Windows Server 2025 to replace a 2014-era database server, ahead of migrating production workloads
  • Stood up Proxmox Backup Server alongside the existing Veeam stack
  • Hardened new Ubuntu VMs, including remediating the Palo Alto SSL inspection CA across the Linux estate
  • Rolled out Netdata for host-level monitoring on Linux
  • Took over Microsoft Tunnel VPN cold: renewed certs, found an MTU issue and a licensing gap silently breaking iOS auth, and handed it back working
  • Spent ~80 hours building a Wiki.js knowledge base: shared drives, stale docs, and tribal knowledge pulled into 23 pages the whole team works from
  • Staged an NPS server with FSLogix as groundwork for MFA on the RDS gateway

Day-to-day, full stack: purchasing decisions and stakeholder engagement · Active Directory · Microsoft 365, Intune & Entra ID · an eight-server RDS farm · Palo Alto firewalls with SSL inspection · Juniper switching · Ubiquiti wireless · CrowdStrike MDR · Veeam · eG Enterprise · phpIPAM, plus the application estate on top: FIPS, GeoMaster, ESRI, GitLab, Kypera, Shiny, and the MSSQL/PostgreSQL databases behind them.

Service Desk Analyst (WWvP) Apr 2025 – Dec 2025 · 9 mos

Department of Health, Tasmania · Contract · Launceston, Tasmania, Australia · Remote

A between-jobs contract after redundancy: IT infrastructure and support management while the Timberlands Pacific role came together.

Senior Service Desk Analyst (NV1) Apr 2022 – Apr 2025 · 3 yrs 1 mo

Telstra Health · Full-time · Sydney, New South Wales, Australia · Remote

Service desk analyst on the 1800RESPECT SDA under a new government-awarded contract, joining in pre-production to onboard hundreds of specialist trauma counsellors against a four-week deadline, working closely with DVConnect, Save the Children Australia, and Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre throughout. The users are trauma counsellors supporting some of society's most vulnerable people; many aren't technical, and the focus was patient, practical support that got them back to their callers quickly.

The role involved:

  • Onboarding therapists alongside clinical leads, in person across Australia and over Teams
  • Hosting training sessions for colleagues and staff from other departments
  • Helping lay the foundations of the Jira ticketing system ahead of go-live
  • Enabling and supporting staff across Genesys, Acorn LMS, Salesforce, and Azure inside a strictly locked-down, ISM-compliant (March 2022) SOE
  • All hands on deck in an autonomous WFH environment, with every level of the business pulling together to land the contract

Alongside 1800RESPECT, sat on the National Cancer Screening Register service desk in quieter periods, mainly assigning tickets to clinical leads and user administration through Active Directory.

Information Technology Specialist May 2021 – Feb 2022 · 10 mos

Bingo Australia · Full-time · Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Supported Bingo Australia's proprietary PlayMate bingo tablets and the Ubiquiti UniFi network and firewall infrastructure behind them. A family-run business, so the role had no fixed edges: highly technical work one day, hands-on operational work the next.

Technical side:

  • Supported the PlayMate tablet fleet end to end: provisioning, imaging, troubleshooting, and getting failed units back into circulation
  • Built improved SOE images for the tablets, cutting setup time and making the fleet more consistent and easier to support
  • Configured and maintained the UniFi network and firewall the devices depended on

Operational side:

  • Warehousing duties, including unloading cargo containers
  • As the business contracted and staff were let go, took on freight coordination, customer service, and sales alongside the technical work
Vacation Rental Owner Jun 2016 – May 2019 · 3 yrs

Earned Superhost status at the first eligible review cycle and held it continuously from then on, which demands sustained 5-star ratings across every hospitality category, a near-perfect response rate, and effectively zero cancellations.

  • Managed the full booking lifecycle: enquiries, pricing, calendar management, and liaising with guests domestically and from overseas
  • Welcomed guests from all over the world, often across language barriers and cultural differences, adapting hosting style to suit
  • Ran tours of the area, organised meals, and hosted from my own home
